Description
Omar Ali Sheikhmous (1942-) was born Syrian (Kurdish) and became a citizen of Sweden in 1974. Educated in Syria until 1961, he studied International Affairs at the University of London (1964-1967). He continued his studies at the University of Stockholm with an MA in International Relations and Ph. D studies in Political Science (1972-1978).
In 1978 he stopped his PhD work for political reasons, joining the leadership of the resistance movement of the 'Patriotic Union of Kurdistan - PUK' in Iraqi Kurdistan against the regime of Saddam Hussein. He was a founding member of its leadership and in charge of its 'Foreign Relations' Committee 1975-1986. He was later advisor to the President of Iraq from 2005 to 2014, Jalal Talabani, and since retiring from politics has continued to play an active role in the field of Kurdish studies. His archive at the University of Exeter contains over 10,000 documents covering Kurdish history, politics and culture.
